How scared I am I refuse to take the chance ill just eat the cheese and pickles with chips.thanks ladies
As long as you heat the meat to 140 degrees you will be safe. There are a ton of items that your not suppose to eat due to Listeriosis. It's a food born illness that gets in you blood stream instead of just your intestinal track and will be passed to the baby causing miscarriage. It's very hard to figure out when you ingested it as it can take up to 30 days to even have any symptoms.
You can eat any cheese that has been pasteurized. Make sure any ice cream you eat has been pasteurized also. I ate a ton of soft serve ice cream while pregnant and I know it's a big no no.
You just need to decide for your self if you really want to take the chance and how much of a chance it really is. Listerioses has less than 100 cases of food poisoning a year!
I DO NOT, however, recommend purchasing a pre-made sandwich like you see in the grocery store or gas station. I did testing on Listeria in my college microbiology coursework, and I found a lot of it in the premade sandwiches from the cafeteria.
Deli meat itself will not hurt your baby. The concern with deli meats in pregnancy is that you could get listeriosis, food poisoning caused by a bacteria that can survive in the fridge. Anybody can get it.
If you eat at a deli counter, have them toast the sandwich, including your meats and cheese, and make sure the sandwich prepper has clean hands/gloves/
If you buy prepackaged deli meats that are sealed and consume them at home, your risk is extremely low. And it's pretty much zero if you have a hot sub. :-)
I was told not to as well. I was told baby can die from a disease that starts with a L.
