what is cystic fibrosis. im 30 weeks tmw and found out im a carrier of cystic fibrosis. is this bad? please tell me. this does not help me think im worried and cant think of anything else. can it affect my baby boy

I am also a carrier i have 2 children and one on the way, my children do not have cf their father has not been tested bc we wouldn't change anything, people do live past these 20's with it. Anyways your baby could only have a chance of having it if the father is also a carrier it is a resecive (can't spell) gene if he's not a carrier do not worry they have no chance of getting the disease. If the father is a carrier you have about a 25% chance of having a child with the disease.

Did some research and they will want to test the dad for it also. From what I read you havr a 35 percent chacne of passing it on, and the life expectancy is 30 s or 40 s. You should look at the cf web site.

Can i just say that it is not true that most people with CF do not live past 20!Back in the 80s children with CF did not live necessarily that lonv but now medicine has changed my friend has CF and she is 27 and juat had a baby!she has to take medicine but aoart from that she is fine.Medicine has changed so much these day!If you are worried about it like the previous comment you can have medical testing in the future.Goodluck

Sorry, I didn't word that the best. But basically if your baby's dad isn't a carrier at all, you only have to know that you have a 50% chance of passing that gene on to your child. Then when your child grows up and decides to have children, they might want to do genetic testing to see if his/her spouse has the gene too. Don't stress too much. Find out if your hubby is a carrier or not and go from there. My husband has CF and is a (lucky) healthy 40 year old :)

If you are a carrier you have a 50% chance of passing that gene along to your offspring. If the baby's dad is not a carrier at all your child will be a carrier and that's it, no problems physically. If your baby's dad is a carrier he also has a 50% chance of passing along that gene. You can get genetic testing fine on the baby's dad to see if he's a carrier. That'd be easy and then you won't have to worry if you find out he's not a carrier.

CF...cystic fibrosis is a disease that attacks the lungs. Mucous fills the lungs up making it hard to breathe. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but according to statics most people with the disease do not live past their 20's without a lung transplant. You will need to do research on this disease and I hope your child doesn't get it. I will be praying for you and your child.
