Soft Cervix 32 weeks pregnant with contractions

Hello,

    My wife had been having period like cramps with no kicks(she's 32 weeks pregnant) for a good day and half or so. So today she was taken to ER, the doc checked hooked her up to a monitor which checks the baby and uterus contractions. we found out that the baby was doing fine,however she was contracting once every 6 minutes so that's 10 times an hour. She did check the Cervix [in a period of 1 1/2 - 2 hrs]and found that although not dilated it was pretty soft or at least soft. She then confirmed it was her new normal and wanted her to rush to ER in case the contractions are intense or are more than 10 etc. She was later sent home.

That being said we are freaking out. Is this normal, we are scared and want to avoid preterm labor at any cost.

I started labor at 29 weeks with twins. They started giving me shots to hold off labor then at 32 weeks I went into the hospital in full blown labor, they gave me shots to stop the contractions and after that failed they gave me steroid shots to develop babies lungs. I was already 5cm dilated at that point. Had the babies the next morning by c-section. They did great, only stayed in NICU 3 weeks to gain weight. If she has not even started to dilated, then she is probably fine for a while. Her Dr. Will watch her closely now and probably check her more often. There are a lot of things they can do to hold off labor until a safe point which is usually 35 weeks and beyond but honestly even now if she were to have the baby, he or she would have a wonderful chance of no complications. Before 32 weeks is when they are really concerned. Tell her to rest up and stay hydrated. Call the Dr. If she notices any chances. Best wishes. Try not to worry too much :)

I would definitely ask your dr about her cervix dilation, if they will give her steroid shots, and if she will get a detailed scan. They will likely have her on bed rest. I have a high risk pregnancy and for me when I do a lot of movement, standing etc. my cervix always shortens as opposed to when I am on modified bed rest. Fortunately your baby has a high chance for survival if born at this point, but ask if there is anything that can be done to increase the likelihood of your lo staying in there longer. Good luck
