No you are not too young. Atrophic vaginitis can happen at any age and is due to having low levels of estrogen which happens when you are breastfeeding. I had this same problem after having my daughter and was prescribed vagifem and premarin estrogen cream – was a lifesaver! Your problem will not go away until your estrogen levels return to normal and even then you may still need some local estrogen to help heal your sore tissues - get yourself a new doc!
So I called a new doctor and explained my condition. She said I am too -young and after 20 plus years of practicing, she has never treated anyone with estrogen cream for atrophic vaginosis during breast feeding. She suggested I use monistat because it may be a yeast infection. So, I decided to not even bother to make an appointment. I am still looking for a new doctor. I am so confused with all that is happening to me: tears/cuts burning, intense itching, painful intercourse, raw feeling...only a day or two of comfort. These feelings are constant. And recently I have seen some whitish/greyish patches/spots on labia.
I have been looking online and I hope it is not Lichen Sclerois, vulvar dystrophy or vulvodynia. I have been in sooooo much pain. The itching has only been really intense now but I have had all of these symptoms when I was diagnosed with H and that is why I thought it was H related. But, I dont know what else it can be. I used to have sex with no problems and no I am having ongoing symptoms. So sad because no answers. I feel so hopeless. I am praying for a doctor who would just listen.
you are absolutely correct! how you treat your herpes is your choice, your doctor's job is to educate you on the choices and help you with that decision, not dictate how you will treat it.
I hope you find a provider who is more up to date on herpes treatment!
Yes I know, but doc won't prescribe meds for suppression only during outbreaks. I thought it was my choice if I wanted to go on suppressive therapy?? Anyway, Im searching for a new gyn. I called and left 2 messages for her to call me back concerning prescribing estrogen cream, but she never did. I didnt like her that much after my last visit. Rather insensitive and lacked patient centered care.
you can take daily suppressive therapy while breast feeding too. it's approved by both the american academy of pediatrics and also la leche league.
Thank you for all that you do. Trust me, you are helping alot of people and we truly appreciate it.
ok thanks. will call first thing tomorrow morning. Grace you are truly a life-saver. I was going crazy thinking it was H acting up nonstop. Thanks so much!!! Hopefully the cream will work. There is so much concerning women's health. My gyn was making it seem like I was crazy. She prescribed Nystatin cream which didnt do anything because I did not have a YEAST infection. With my internal med doc diagnosing me with shingles and gyn prescribing a useless cream, I can just scream. I def want to study women health because of this. It's frustrating!!!
yes it is but they can just call it in for you since they've examined you and didn't find any signs of infection when you've been seen.
I thought it was prescription only. Is there something I can it OTC.? Doc won't prescribe anything over phone before she examines me for sure.
yes you can use the estrogen creams while pregnant. why not just call your gyn and ask about trying it to see if it helps? saves you a visit.
Yes it is. She loves to breast feed and I enjoy bonding with her. I just read that the doc can prescribe estrogen cream if it is atrophic vag. However, I am not sure how that will affect my milk supply and breast feeding. Will call gyn tomorrow to make an appointment? Baby is starting solids so I do feel a little better in terms of itching but I still experience tear/cuts. I want to breast feed as long as the I can; at least for a few more months.
don't know where my reply went....lol
yes, all the changes in hormones can really cause us gals some issues.
kudos to you for breast feeding your baby though - it is the best thing you can EVER do for your baby!!!
Thanks. I will follow up with gyn. I just read that atrophic vaginitis can also be caused by breast feeding which I am doing now. I have a 6 month old that Im breast feeding. But burning, itching and pain is just so annoying!
usually they don't test for estrogen levels to diagnose atrophic vaginitis. You can have perfectly normal blood estrogen levels and still not have enough estrogen going to your genital skin. this is a side effect of being on birth control pills sometimes because of the way the liver processes the hormones in the pills. usually it's a diagnosis made by examination of symptoms for the most part.
the igg being + for zoster means that you had it in the past ( which you knew already ). Usually with shingles ob's, the igm is +, signaling the virus being active again. should you get a recurrence of that pain again, I'd see a neurologist for further work up.
I have been posting everywhere. Did I post about shingles on HHP too?
Thanks Grace, I am in my late 20's and never experienced anything like this before. Is there any specific test the gyn needs to do to check estrogen level? It was my internal medicine doc that diagnosed with me shingles. I dont think he knew what the heck he was talking about. No, I did not follow up. Symptoms just eventually stopped. It was weird that IGM was normal and of course IGG would be positive because I had chickenpox when I was younger. So strange with these doctors???
this doesn't sound like it's related to your hsv2 at all.
if you are testing negative for vaginal infections, you might want to discuss with your gyn about using topical estrogen cream for a few months to see if that helps. Sometimes our skin tears and we can get what is called atrophic vaginitis ( google it ). It typically occurs in post menopausal women but even younger gals can get it. It causes the skin to thin and tear more easily as well as be irritated.
did you ever follow up with a neurologist for your "shingles" diagnosis or was that just your regular provider that decided you had a shingles ob with a negative igm and no obvious shingles rash?
