Hi, I am almost 58 and have never smoked a day in my life and was diagnosed about 1 half yrs ago with COPD, go on www.webmd.com and type in COPD stages. it will tell you the 4 stages and what to expect with each one.
MOST IMPORTANT...Mom needs to stop smoking. those around her could get COPD as I did. and it is not just from smoke but also chemicals and other things you breath in. I hope this helps you and gives you the answers you want.
One of the most important bits of information you have provided is that “she is also still smoking”. If the rapid progression of her COPD is to be slowed or prevented, she must stop smoking immediately, that is if she is to avoid the harsh effects of COPD on the quality of one’s life, in the not too distant future. The difference between a “lung capacity of 48% (in general terms) and a lung capacity of, say 30%, is enormous in terms of one’s quality of life and, if your Mom does not stop smoking, that further loss of lung function could transpire in a very few years.
I suggest that you and she speak with her doctor and put together a plan to help her stop smoking and this should be done without further delay.
Good luck and good for you for taking action to help your Mom.
