excited behaviour

my son is eleven and going to secondary school in september. since being a toddler he has always shown excitement im worried because he still does it and i thought he would of grown out of it by now. he rubs his nose with his knuckles, goes tense at the shoulders and holds his breath for a few seconds. if hes watching the telly he sometimes carnt sit still. ive always tried not to make a big thing of this and when i ask him he says he doesent know hes doing these things. i dont want him to be laffed at school, he needs to now how to control his behaviour. thankyou for reading this question, i would be very gratefull for some advice.

In the process of trying to determine how to proceed, it will be important to rule out several possibilities. First, it must be determined that your son's neurological status is OK and that none of the gestures you describe indicate any neurological abnormality (e.g., tic disorder). Second, it will be helpful to rule out the presence of any emotional disorder (e.g., anxiety disorder or any condition along the pervasive developmental disorder spectrum). Third, a problem with sensory integration should be considered. Any symptom or array of symptoms can point to a number of possibilities, and they each have to be considered in order to illuminate an approach to intervention.
