In the process of trying to determine how to proceed, it will be important to rule out several possibilities. First, it must be determined that your son's neurological status is OK and that none of the gestures you describe indicate any neurological abnormality (e.g., tic disorder). Second, it will be helpful to rule out the presence of any emotional disorder (e.g., anxiety disorder or any condition along the pervasive developmental disorder spectrum). Third, a problem with sensory integration should be considered. Any symptom or array of symptoms can point to a number of possibilities, and they each have to be considered in order to illuminate an approach to intervention.
