is there another way to identify cancer?

I am due for a core biopsy on Thursday, but am terrified. I understand that there has been much research into "seeding", spreading of cancer through the needle channels. Is there an alternative, such as MRI to diagnose cancer or benign areas?
I would do anything to avoid puncturing the suspected area. I would not mind a lumpectomy if it could be all taken, but is this possible without a biopsy that punctures the carcinoma?
many thanks
Annette

I asked my surgeon about the needle dispersing cancer into the blood stream and he said there was no proof of that.

Hi.  The most accurate way of diagnosing breast cancer is still by means of a biopsy.  Unlike some tumors like liver cancer or testicular cancer, breast cancer does not have a reliable tumor marker which you can use in lieu of biopsy for diagnosis.  There is indeed a possibility of "seeding" of the cancer through the needle channels, but reports from clinical studies estimate the probability of seeding at less than 1%.  I have also yet to hear of any report of disease progression caused by core needle biopsy.

Hi Annette .... no dear, a biopsy is the one and only way to diagnosis cancer. The spreading and seeding you mention just doesn't happen. Cancer is not like a cyst; where if it is punctured it's contents spill out. With cancer it just doesn't work that way .... no way to spread it by sticking a needle into it. Calm yourself now ... you will be fine and the biopsy will be over soon. Millions of us have all had a biopsy and it's a fairly simple procedure. Regards ......
